LICENCES FOR FARMERS

THE DAIRY INDUSTRY WAIRARAPA SUGGESTION A suggestion that all bona fide dairy farmers should be licensed as a move toward raising and maintaining the standard of the Dominion's export dairy produce was made by Mr. James Leminie, at the annual meeting of the Masterton branch of the Farmers' Union. He presented a remit that he had drafted for the interprovincial conference at Wanganui should it be considered suitable.

The text of the remit was:—"That with a view to bringing the dairy industry to the standard of an exact science, and in order to ensure that only the finest quality is produced this conference recommends: (1) That all bona fide dairy farmers be licensed; (2) that before a licence is issued a fixed standard of efficiency and cleanliness be achieved to the satisfaction of the dairy instructor; (3) that no farmer having more than 1000 sheep be granted a dairying licence; and (4) that full-time employees be ineligible for a licence as an adjunct to their employment. Note: The practice of sheep farmers and employees milking herds detracts from the industry by way of lack of quality and over-production." It was resolved to place the remit before the other Wairarapa branches and that it then he given further consideration before being forwarded to the interprovincial conference.
