SLAUGHTER OF CALVES
BUSH FOR IRISH BOUNTY MARKET GLUTTED WITH VEAL CORK, April 20 The rush to secure the, 10s bounty for calf skins has led to the wholesale slaughter of calves in the Irish Free State. The market is glutted with veal and people refuse to eat it. Hundreds of carcases are being dumped into old quarries. Veal is being sold at a few pence in isome centres, and in others it is being distributed to the poor free. English prices arc accordingly depressed, and many buyers in London are advising the withholding of supplies. Yet the amazing slaughter continues unabated. The killing is often cruelly bungled, hammers and even stones being used to kill animals. The Ministry of Agriculture wants the slaughter of 2U0.000 calves in order to reduce the number of cattle, hence it originated the bounty scheme.
