BLUSHING OFFICIAL
INSPECTOR EMBRACED INCIDENT IN THE STREET A tall, fair traffic inspector in Christchurch had an embarrassing experience while stationed on point duty at an intersection near the Majestic Theatre about 5 p.m. the other day. A gaily-dressed elderly lady, who evidently had dined well but not wisely, asked the inspector's assistance across the busy streams of traffic. She was safely piloted over. Then, after a brief halt on the footpath, she wandered back to the inspector's station. The inspector, thinking she was making a return trip, protested, but held up the traffic and beckoned her to continue. The old lady evidently misread the inspector's intentions, for she suddenly tried to embrace him. All the inspector could do was to hold her at arm'slength with one hand and signal traffic with the other. Finally the inspector persuaded his admirer to return t6 the footpath, where she remained for some time rather disconsolate, waving and throwing kisses. The large crowd about at such a busy time of the day thoroughly enjoyed the incident. The blushing inspector did not.
