A pica of not guilty \vas entered. _ . For the prosecution, it was stated that defendant went to Will , , a !V Limited, a financial agency of whicl Goldwatcr was managing directoi, and obtained a loan upon the furnitme.lt was found later that the chattels belonced to defendant's husband, and the woman then admitted that the furniture was not hef own. Goldwatcr, nho had received one payment ot 1-s fid in return, believed an example should be made, as the practice was one which occurred with some tiequency in the city."Mv client is not alone in her idea that husbands and wives have joint ownership." stated Sir. Noble. "1 lionsands of women in this country think that what belongs to their husbands belongs to them." Mr. Singer: That is the trouble. Counsel thought it was astonishing that the company should have made the advance without consulting the husband- The furniture was worth some j 100 and defendant said she had no Fraudulent intent by obtaining the lO Tn evidence, the woman admitted to the magistrate that she told Goldwater she did not want her husband to know of the transaction. She was borrowing for a friend. Defendant was admitted to probation for • six months, the magistrates commenting that it was desirable for moneylenders to consult both husband and wife in such cases. Defendant had deceived her husband as well as moneylenders. .
