ALSATIAN DOGS
Sir, —As an owner but not a breeder of an Alsatian, my interest has been aroused by a section of the community condemning a breed, or apparently all breeds of dogs, that do not work sheep and cattle. I have noticed on two occasions, one recently and one 12 months or more ago, reports because an Alsatian had been seen worrying sheep. In the recent case the Alsatian was not caught, but ia the previous case I noticed from the hearing in Court that the dog was an Alsatian cross. Now, it would be interesting to know' how many cases of sheep-worry-ing there are each year where the dogs are cattle or sheep dogs or crosses. Why not report all or none? The Alsatian I own is just over 13 months old and has had no other dog to help train him, yet he is shaping well as a cattle dog, so I, for one, cannot agree that they are so absolutely useless as a breed, H. Stallard.
