HIGH EXCHANGE RATE

CHANGE NOT JUSTIFIED STATEMENT BY MR. COATES [ lIV THI,ECiRAI'H —(>WN CO I!RKSPONI>KNT] WELLINGTON, Friday "Nothing has occurred to warrant an alteration in the rate of exchange," said the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Finance, when asked if this question was under reviow by tho Government. He was reminded that the Prime Minister, lit. Hon. G. \Y. Forbes, had stated that the high exchange would continue until the end of tho present export season, and it was suggested that this inferred a reconsideration in June. "You are asking me," said Mr. Coates, "if there is likely to be any effect as the result of that statement. My reply is that I know of nothing which has occurred in connection with the country's economic situation that would justify a change in the rate, or that leads me to suggest even in the remotest sense there should be a reviow of tho whole situation."
