GARDEN FETE
THE GIRL GUIDE FUND _ The picturesque garden of Mrs. T. C. Savage, Orakei Road, Remuera, wag the scone of a garden fete held on Saturday afternoon for the benefit of the funds of the Auckland Provincial Girl Guides. Bathed in brilliant sunshine throughout the afternoon, the garden presented a lovely sight with its forte old trees, and rich autumn foliage. Flower-bordered paths leading to shady retreats, formed an ideal setting lor the stalls, .which were stocked with an attractive supply of goods.
The function was opened by Mrs. W. R. Wilson, late Chief Commissioner of the Girl Guides of New Zealand, who was received by Mrs. R. J. CoateSi provincial commissioner, ' and Miss Menu Burgin. A guard of honour was formed in the drive by guiders, rangers, and first-class guides. Mrs. Wilson, in expressing deep regret at her retirement from an active part in the work of the Girl Guides, said she would always watch their progress with tremendous interest. As late head of the Girl Guide movement in New Zealand, she felt she would always be their mother, and she urged the girls to remember the motto of the guides—" Faith, Love, and Service ' and to live up to their ideals and be courageous. In conclusion she appealed to the public to give their support to a movement of world-wide importance. Although every effort wajs being made by the guides and guiders, it was; impossible for the girls to raise sufficient funds to keep the movement financial in their own province. During the afternoon Englisji country dances were given on the lawn by a group of rangers and guiders. A iplay.let, in which a group of small Brownies from the North Shore took part., was presented by Miss N. Clark.
