RECORDS BROKEN

NOTABLE PERFORMERS AUSTRALIANS IMPRESS FINE JUMPING EFFORTS J. -W. SAVIDAN'S GREAT RUN .Some high-class performances wore ■witnessed at the Domain on Saturday afternoon during the meeting held on the occasion of the visit of the Australian* athletes, three records being broken. Favoured by ideal weather conditions it- proved a most successful meeting/ the all-round jumping of J. P. Metcalfe being greatly admired. T. E. Hampson impressed as a sprinter by his .fine and easy style, while although beaten in the mile E. "VY. Barwick was by no means disgraced.

the high jump P. J. Hackett, Auckland and New Zealand champion, cleared 6fc. 1 1-Sin, the best jump ever done by a New Zealander. The previous best jump was that of A. A. Cameron, Otago. 6ft. Oiin., at Wellington in 1933. Jumps of 6ft. were cleared respectively by F. Brady at Wellington, and G. J. Sceats at Christchurch, in 1927, It was the first occasion on which 6ft. was cleared at the Domain. Metcalfe jumped 6ft. 3 1-Sin. but failed to concede a 6in. handicap to Hackett. While attempting to better his figures Hackett hurt his foot and retired.

Great jumping was seen in the hoo, step and-jump. H. K. Brainsby, Auckland and New Zealand champion, covered 49ft. SJht.. off the scratch mark. Metcalfe's best jump was 49ft. 3iin. In an exhibition jump Metcalfe cotered 50ft. lin., figures which he has twice equalled preriously ou the tour. B rains by's jump beat the Xew Zealand record of 47ft. 6in. held by A. A. Cameron, Otago, by 2ft. 2iin. Although unplaced in the long jump Metcalfe did the best distance with a leap of 22ft. Sin. Hampson too Speedy In .the invitation sprint handicaps T. E. Hampson, Australia, proved too speedy for his opponents among whom we're A. J. Elliot, a former New Zealand champion,. and V. Walker, the Auckland champion. Hampson won both the hundred yards and the 22Q ya/ds easily. In the hundred yards with the advantage of a slight wind he equalled the New Zealand record of 9 X better performance, however, was in the 220 yds, when running against the wind he covered the distance in 21 4-ss.

Most interest in the mile open handicap centred in the four scratch runners E. W. Barwick, Australia, A. R. Wilson, Auckland champion, X. F. Cooper And J. Valder. Although none was placed the race resolved itself into a dual between Wilson and Barsvick. On the day Wilson was clearly superior and ran away from his opponent in the last quarter mile. Wilson's time was 4m 23s and Barwick's 4m 26 2-os. '' Three-Mile Achievement

One of the features of the meeting was tho great performance of J. W. Savidan in the three miles. Running practically alone throughout he finished very strongly to win by about 3ooyds. and covered the distance in 14m 27 1-53. He thus broke the record of R. A. Rose Urn 29 l-os made at Wellington in 1927. Savidan's time for the firstmile was 4m 40s, second, 4m ols and third, 4m 56 l-os. E. W. Barwick considers Savidan tho greatest distance runner in the British Empire to-day. Cycle races, walks, hurdle and field events all lent variety to the programme which was got off promptly /and reflected much credit on the officials concerned. The attendance was esti- j mated afc 10.000 and the Australians j and record breakers were enthusiastically received.
