DEATH OF CHIEFTAINESS
POPULAR PERSONALITY FUNERAL AT TE KUITI [rfiOM OUR OWN correspondent! TE KUITI, Saturday The funeral of the late Mrs. Hera King!, a paramount cbieftainess of the Ngati-Maniapoto tribe, who died this week, took place to-day. The deceased was a daughter of Kingi Wetere and grand-daughter of Te Reringa Wetere, who rendered great service to the early settlement in the King Country. She was also a niece of Kiri Haehsie Wetere, who released Mr. Hursthouse when he was captured and bound by the Maoris at Te Kumi while engaged in survey* ing the route for the Main Trunk line. "King" Koroki arrived yesterday to attend the tangi, which is being held at the local pa. He was accompanied by Mr. Haunui, his adviser, together with other prominent members of the king movement, also Mr. Taite Te Tomo, M.P. Through his uncle, the "king" paid a tribute to the deceased, who was very popularly known and was deeply interested in any movement calculated to benefit the Maori race. Deceased leaves a family of grown-up sons and daughters.
