SUBMARINE COMMANDER
FORMER VISIT RECALLED Pleasant memories of a visit toAuck' land in 1906 were recalled yesterday by Captain Chester Wells, a retired officer of the United States Navy, wlic was a through passenger on the Mari' posa. Captain Wells was' gunnery officer on the Baltimore, which visited Auckland in that year, a.nd during t month in which -his ship was in pori he lived at the Penrose rifle range and conducted a musketry course for hi men. ' . Before retiring from the service Id years ago. Captain Wells was in command of the Atlantic submarine flotilla,, but during his long service he has beer stationed at most of the United Stater naval bases, especially in the northerr Pacific. During the war he was engaged in convoy duties across the At lantic. His present trip is a holiday one, nv wife being an Australian, who is visit ing her country- after an absence of seven years.
