SWIMMING TEACHER

WORK IN THE SCHOOLS RECOGNITION OF SERVICE The outstanding work accomplished by Mr. C. E. Bernard, in teaching children swimming, was fittingly recognised at the Mount Eden school swimming sports yesterday afternoon. Mr. Bernard was presented with the blazer of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, which may be worn only by winners of national championships or by persons who have rendered distinguished service in encouraging swimming. For 14 years Mr. Bernard has devoted his leisuro hours to teaching schoolchildren swimming, and has divided his attention among 25 schools. During tho last four years he has been associated with the Kowhai Intermediate, Brixton Road, Gladstone, Maungawhau, Grafton and Mount Eden schools. In that period, he has taught about 1500 pupils from these six schools to swim. The blazer was presented by Mr. A. Macgregor, headmaster of the Mount Eden school, and president of the Auckland Primary Schools' Amateur Swimming and Life-Saving Association, who congratulated Mr. Bernard upon his fine achievement. Mr. Bernard's work was voluntary, and his reward was in the knowledge of the service he had done to others. His pupils would repay him by carrying on the work in which lie was so deeply interested.
