DAIRY MARKETING

ATTITUJ3E IN TARANAKI , / SUBSIDY NOT FAVOURED ' •t • v [by telegraph—PßESS association] HAWERA. Friday The consensus of opinion obtained from a number of representative South Taraiaaki dairy farmers during the last few days indicates that no high hopes are" held in connection with the butterfat subsidy of 2d per lb. recommended by the conference at Wellington last week. The alternative suggestion made by Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., finds a considerable measure of support among dairymen, several of whom believe it should be fully considered before the industry is committed to a butter-fat subsidy. Mr. Dickie's suggestion was that the industry should apply a voluntary quota, surplus produce to be purchased at the. current London parity bv the Government and utilised in efforts to establish new markets.

The chief merits claimed for the proposal are that the adoption of the voluntary quota would help to restore British foodwill for the New Zealand dairy inustry, and that it might raise the London, price and give the industry a quantity of produce with which to explore the possibilities of new markets. >
