NEW CHURCH OPENED

CEREMONY IN UREWERA [fkom our own correspondent! EOTOBUA, Thursday The opening ceremony of the new Presbyterian Church at Ruatahuna, in the Urewera Country, on the Lake Waikareraoana-Rotorua road, was attended by 25 Maoris and pakehas. The service was conducted by the Rev. I). D. Scott, assisted by the Rev. J. C. Laughton (Taupo), Rev. Hemi Potatau (Nuhaka), and Mr. J. A. L. Carter (Te Whaite). A Maori member of the Mothers' League presented Mr. and Mrs. Scott with bouquets. At the mission house chiefs and other speakers expressed satisfaction with the work which had been accomplished in Ruatahuna, and made especially cordial reference to the services of Sister Annie, who had worked among the natives for the last 17 years. Valuable help had been given by Miss Monfries Gorrie), Miss Tweed, and the Rev. Laughton, the latter having erected the first mission house with palings. After the service a feast was provided for all. The new church has been named Te Umu Ki Taupo, in association with the old occult knowledge of the Tuhoe people.
