BRITISH INDUSTRIES MORE PEOPLE EMPLOYED THE LATEST STATISTICS STRIKING COMPARISONS By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received March C. 7.5 p.m.) British Wireless RUGBY, March 5 It is estimated that on February 19 there were about 9,911,000 insured persons aged from 16 to 04 in employment in Britain. This was 67,000 more than a month before, and 625,000 more than a year ago.
The industries which showed the greatest improvement in the past month were: Building and public works, contracting, tailoring, boot and shoe manufacturing and pottery manufacturing. Also there was some improvement in the iron and steel, engineering and motor vehicle industries and the shipping services. The numbers of unemployed persons on the registers of the employment exchanges in Britain on February 19 were: — "Wholly unemployed . . 1,881,532 Temporarily unemployed . . 340,897 Normally in casual employment 95,480 Total 2,317,909 This total comprised 1,883,782 men, 58,368 boys, 328,146 women and 47,613 girls. It was 71,159 less than the number on registers on January 22, and 538,729 less than a year ago.
