THRILLS ON A BEACH
TWO HORSES RUN AMOK PLUCKY WOMAN'S " WHOA" A wild escapade of two fine upstanding hacks belonging; to city residents out for a rich; —and a swim—gave a woman picnicker at the Makara Beach, near Wellington, a few days ago an opportunity of skill in the handling of runaway Ihorses. The two horses, in full ridint equipment, ; were tethered to a fence while their riders disported them selreq : in-the cool waters - of the beach lagoon)
The horses suddenly became restless. Roaring and plunging in their excited state, they broke uway and, kicking fearsomely, splasjied into the lagoon. Reaching the ■ Mainland, they careered wildly across tljo rough boulders on the beach. Eventually the horses landed on the track which, leads through the fishermen's village, and made off at racing speed toward the rocks of the little bay. Near the track there were five women and a young man, with a billy boiling, preparing tea.
Seeing the wild approach of the horses, there was in ;cnse excitement in the party. One of the.women, however, stepped out gallantly and heroically faced the charge. "With her arms fearlessly spread out, she called "Whoa!" and the animals promptly stopped a few inches from her arms. When the breathless riders ape pared on the scene they showered the:r praise on the woman for her pluck. She had had, it was subsequerly gathered, a farm training.
