ENTERTAINMENTS

PLAZA THEATRE Warner Baxter, Helen Vinson an/3 Warner Oland are the principals in a large cast of talented players which gives a vivid interpretation of As Husbands Go," the main picture on the programme being shown at the Plaza. JAMES* THEATRE Elissa Landi, Paul Lukas and Esther Ralston are included in the cast of "By Candlelight," the picture on the programme which is attracting large audiences to the St. James' Theatre. It is sophisticated comedy at its best, being a gay tale of Vienna and Monte Carlo. The amusing story tells of the complications which ensue when a maid and a butler, both servants of nobility, masquerade to each other, claiming that they are of royal blood. James Whale,' who directed " The Invisible Man," further enhances his reputation in this production. May Robson is the principal in " Lady for a Day,' the film to commence a season at the theatre on Friday.

CIVIC THEATRE The four Marx brothers further enhance their excellent reputation in " Duck Soup," the hilarious comedy which is on the programme being shown at the Civic Theatre. The comic situations are mostly engineered during the war between Freedonia, the-land of the carefree, and Sylvania, a neighbouring state. This popular comedy combination made notable appearances in Animal Crackers " and " Horsefeathers, and its latest production is well up to standard. It is excellent fare throughout and the direction was in the capable hands of one of the most experienced directors in Hollywood. James Dunn, the attractive young actor who gave such a sterling performance in " Over the Hill and " Bad Girl," gives another sound performance in the leading role, while Claire Trevor also is in the cast. RECENT THEATRE Bebe Daniels gives an excellent performance in the leading role of The Song You Gave Me," the picture heads the entertaining programme being presented at the Regent Theatre. She is capably supported by players of the calibre of Victor Yarconi, Claude Hulbert and Lester Matthews. The pictiire has a particular appeal to lovers of the light musical romance and is set m the beautiful surroundings of Vienna.

STRAND THEATRE The ramifications of the American wheat markets make a vivid theme for " Golden Harvest," the current attraction at the Strand Theatre.
