YACHTING MISHAPS
CAPSIZES IN HARBOUR corsair loses her mast PALL THE CREWS RESCUED rThe strong northerly wind experienced in Auckland on Saturday resulted in a number of yachting mishaps on both the Waitematu and Manukail Harbours. There was no loss of life, all the crews of the capsized boats being rescued. The 18ft. M class boat Matarere capsized off Devonport while competing in thn Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron's race for crews under .21 years of age. When the boat turned ever her crew clung to tho hull, and were later picked up by a passing launch.
The 18ft. V class boat Marianne, which was taking part in tho Northcote and Birkenhead regatta, experienced trouble with her spinnaker, resulting in tho boat capsizing near the entrance to St. Mary's boat harbour. A competitor in the race for launches withdrew from tho contest and went to tho assistance of Marianne and her crew.
In tho raco for keel yachts, the now C class boat Corsair, owned and sailed by Mr. F. Lidgard, lost her mast off Devonport. Sho was carrying full sail and, without any warning, tho mast snapped off close to tho deck. Sho was picked up by a launch and towed to her moorings at Bayswater. The 26ft. H class boat Celox, when holding second position in the raco for mullet boats, sprang her mast on tho homeward journey. Her wow smartly lowered away and, after close reefing the mainsail, continued in tho raco. On the Manukau Harbour the yachts Fay and Sea Toiler capsized while competing in the Manukau Yacht and Motor-boat CVub's annual regatta Tho crews of both boats were rescued by several launches, which immediately went to the assistance of their fellow vachtsmen.
