A si* lengths' improvement on first day's form -was shown by Emotion to bent Ida Merlin* in the opening event at the Wanganui races to-day. Ida Merling was ridden in behind Arvada. and Emotion to the straight. He finished better than on Thursday, but Emotion, -vras always the winner. Hunt the Slipper • ran a very good third and should not, be long. 'Knollmere, improved by his race on the first day, ran on rmich better at the finish of the Fordell High-weight Handicap, and won nicely from the first day's winner Blacksmith. Knollmere was always in front, but Blacksaiith did not get a smooth run early, being four or five horses out and giving Knollmere eeveral lengths' start over the last half. They were well clear of the others at the post. High Grader beiug a poor third. High Grader was the only one outside of Blacksmith that ever looked likely, but he did not run on. Canopy drew No. 1 in the Juvenile Handicap, and, beginning well, led all the way to score comfortably from Waipiro, who did not have ft great deal to spare from Etiquette, with Silver Wings and Ingenuity next. The luck of the draw was of great advantage to (he winner, and she also benefited by the change of riders, but she fs smart nnd won well. Etiquette may have been a trifle unlucky. Silver Wings, drawn on the outer, did not begin well, and although she ran up fast behind Canopy on' • the turn, she weakened at the finish. Canopy wan having only her third race, and this was her first win.

Rust, a solid favourite for the Okoie Figqk Handicap, won well at the finish. She was .always handily placed, but cot into a little difficulty round about the half-mile. She extricated herself well and once she challenged. St; Clara, who had been up with the pace..maker, Te Rangitumau, the race was over. St. (Mara ran well up to her good torm. and Pungo finished Ktrpngly into third place, "after lying in the rut for the greater part of the running. Blue Boy and Lalla Quex did best of tho others, but were never dangerous. Rust has developed solid form after a series of disappointments. The betting indicated Tiger Gain, who whs ridden by R. Rcrd, in the Wanganui Handicap, nnd he ditlv arrived, one of the shortest-priced winner' for some time in a racw with u reasonably open appearance, and he was no good Ihina. But for having to run wide into lino All Humbug may have beaten him, for lie j'ust failed to get him. Senegal made the pace from Tiger (lain, who wont ahead on the turn, closely followed by Prince Colossus. There was a great amount of bumping between this pair entering (he straight, and after Prince Colossus disappeared. All Humbug put in a great run on the outer nnd lost only by a head, with Senegal a fair third and Plateau fourth. Roval Hunting, a warm favourite in the four-horse open sprint, was carted along at a solid pace early by Souchong, who had the rail position, and both were run out hefore reaching the straight. Porotiti had then run past- on the outer, and won without difficulty from Royal Routine, with Souchong next and the favourite Inst. The solid paco settled the top-weights, and Porotiti, with improvement, won easily. All Spirit, having his second race for the day, was always well up in (he concluding event', and won narrowly from Matorni, who had been (he lender throughout. Boon was a fair third from Hntuma and Alcides. Artful Dodger was slow away and lost all chance, and Hunting Lodge also failed to show up at nny stage. Nightly, was galloped over six furlongs at Ricearton this morning in the presence of his owner, fie was lame nfterwards and his trio to Sydney, 'although not. definitely off, is not now likely to be undertaken.
