REGATTA AT NORTHCOTE DISPLAY OF SMALL CRAFT CORSAIR LOSES HER MAST The annual regatta, promoted by residents of Northcote Birkenhead, was held off Northcote on Saturday afternoon. Large entries were received and some very close finishes were recorded, especially in the race for the Wakatere class, in which three boats finished a dead-heat. A fresh northerly breeze prevailed throughout the afternoon, enabling the boats to complete the course in record time. During the afternoon the Corsair broke her mast off Devonport, the 18-footer Marianne capsized off St. Mary's Bay and the 26-footer Celox sprung her mast and had to close reef to enable her to finish. The scow Dominion, owned by Messrs. Winstone, Limited, was used as flagship and was moored off Northcote Wharf, all eyents starting and finishing between the flagship and a buoy moored west. The officials in charge of the racing were:—Starters. Messrs. W. A. Wilkinson, N. J. Campbell and A. Couldrey; judges, Mr. G. R. Hutchinson and Captain H. H. Sergeant; timekeeper, Mr. G. E. Owhanga, Maybelle, Lol.ima and Moutere in that order. Janet was late. Ou the lead down the harbour Speedwell passed Corsair and Owhanga replaced Maybelle. Off Devonport Corsair lost her mast and Owhanga went into second place. Speedwell continued her lead, finishing 6s ahead of Owhanga. ' The race started at 2.30 p.m. The finishing times were:—Speedwell (scr), 4h 22m 245; Owhanga (13ra), 4h 22m 30s; Maybelle (9m), 4h 27m 19s; Loloma (12m), 4h 32m 555; Moutere (10m), 4h 34m 30s. An excellent start was effected in thn race for classes H, L and N. Celox crossed at gunfire with Omatere, Cynara and Spray only a few seconds astern. Winifred was c*m late. Omatere passed Celox shortly after the start and Spray headed Cynara. Omatere opened up a big lead and had matters all her own way for the remainder of the course. Celox wm doing well until she had a mishap to her mast. The race started at 3.35 p.m. The finishing times were:—Omatere (scr), 4h 23m 48s; Celox (2m), 4h 32m 375; Cynara (11m), 4h 35m 3s; Winifred (15m), 4h 43m 50s. Spray retired. The result on corrected times was:—Omatere, 1; Cynara, 2; Celox, 3. • PARORO LEADS THE FLEET The big fleet of 18-footers made a good showing as they crossed the starting line, headed by Paroro, Mischief, Memutu, Avian, Manutere and Martha S. Paroro quickly drew away from her rivals and opened up a big lead, which she kept on both rounds of the course. Passing the flagship at the end of the first round she was 2m 17s ahead of Memutu, which was 3s in front of Manutere. Martha S. followed 233 after Manutere. In the second round Manutere replaced Memutu. which also had to give place to Mischief. The race started, at 2.40 p.m. The finishing times were: —Paroro (lim), 3h 46m 48s; Manutere (scr). 3h 48m 20s; Memutu (scr). 3h 48m 495; Mischief (6m), 3h 49m 355; Martha S. The result on corrected times was:—Mischief,- 1; Sun, 2; Paroro, 3 Another good start was witnessed in the race for class S. The new boat Sirona was first away and close on her etern came Marlene, Namu, Scimitar, Aotea, and Mascot. Sirona gradually drew away from the other boats and greatly improved her position after rounding the mark off the Western Wharf. In the second round, however, Sirona was passed hy both Marlene and Scimitar, which had pressed her in the first round.

The race started at 2.45 p.m. The finishing times were:—Marleno 'Bcr), 3b 52m 30s; Scimitar (scr), 3h 54m 12s; Sirona (scr), 3h 54m 255; Namu (3jm), 3h 55m 425; Clio (9m), 3h 57m 335; Mascot (12m). 4h 2m. 275; Kittiwake (9m). 4h 4m 345; Aotea (9m), 4h 5m 265. The result on corrected times was:—Clio. 1; Mascot, 2; Namu, 3. THE 14-FOOT CLASSES In the contest for class Y, Karoro. which was sailing her maiden race, crossed the line first and led her rivals on both rounds of the course. The race started at 2.50 p.m. The finishing times were;—Karoro (scr). 4h 0m 21s; Demon (lm). 4h 0m sls; Stormy (4m), 4h 2m 51s; Rebel (scr), 4h 5m 57a; Aloha (4m), 4h 6m ss; Jupiter (6m), 4h 6m 13b. Continuance retired. The result on corrected times was;— Stormy, 1; Demon, 2; Jupiter, 3. The race for classes T and X brought out 12 competitors. At gunfire Valet crossed the line just ahead of Sybils and Aileen; then followed Eleanor. Rona .M.. Rangi. Kismet, Swiftsure and Zephyr, with the others a little further away. The X boat Aileen was soon in the lead and on the completion of the first round was 2m 35s ahead of Sybila, which was lm 10s in front of Zephyr. Fifteen seconds further away came Rangi. Aileen improved her position in the second round.

The race started at 2.55 p.m. The finishing times were:—Aileen (scr), 4h lm 435; Sybila (scr), 4h 7m 21s; Zephyr (4m). 4h Dm 7s; Valet (lm), 4h 9m 12s; Rangi (12m), 4h 9m 295; Shalimar (3m). 4h 10m 12s; Ace (sm), 4h 11m 255; Eleanor (8m). 4h 12m 48s; Rona M. (8m), 4h 13m 19s: Kismet (6m). 4h 14m 18s; Foam (15m). 4h 15m Is; Swiftsure (13m), 4h 15m 15s: Maile (10m), 4h 15m 53». Tho result on corrected times was:—Rangi. 1; Foam. 2; Aileen, 3. Tho class Z boats only sailed one round of the course, which they completed in very fnst times. Nine boats ciossed the line within seconds of one another. Trevic took tho lead at the start, but was passed by Me Too on the first leg of the course. The race started at 3.5 p.m. The finishing times were:—Me Too (scr), 3h 45m 345; Delphine (scr), 3h 4<Jm 355; Trevic (lm). 3h 47m 575; Betty (3m), 3h 48m 435.; lolanthe (3m), 3h 49m 28s; Teroa (4m). 8h 50m 51s; Taniaki (8m). 3h 51m 40a; Arihana (6m), 4h 9m 525. The result, on corrected times was:— Tamaki, 1; Me Too, 2; Betty. 3 The race for local yachts brought out 10 competitors and was well contested, especially between Opah and Kea. The result on corrected times was:— Irene, 1: Sea Bubble, 2: Yvonne. 3. The Wakatere boats sailed the same course as that for class Z and the finish wbs so close that the judge was unable to separate three of the boat-a as they, crossed the lino.
