WEATHER AFFECTS TRIALS ST. GEORGE'S GOOD RACING MRS. JOHN CLARK SHIELD Most unfavourable water conditions prevailed oii the Waterfront road course on Saturday afternoon, and it Was necessary to abandou the club trial procaines of the St. George's, Waiteinata and Auckland Rowing Clubs. At West End, although it was necessary to depart from the usual course, tho programme was proceeded with, and tho Airs. John Clark Shield competed lor. Four crews laced the starter, and keen racing took place, V. Maclfarlane's crew winning the final. At North Shore local oarsmen were more fortunate, the north-easterly breeze prevailing being more favourable. to water conditions on that side of the harbour. Subscription trials were held, three crews participating. Later during the week-end the conditions were ideal and the St.' George's Club took full advantage of them to decide trial fours for the Sir James

Coated Cup and caps. A really high standard of racing was revealed, and in the two heats mid final there were keen finishes. The final was won by a particularly strong crew stroked by W. J. Dean. WEST END CLTJB MRS. JOHN CLARK SHIELD In spite of the unfavourable conditions at West End on Saturday the annual contest for the Mrs. John Clark Shield was proceeded with. Four crewg competed, two heats and a final being necessary to determine tho issue. The course along the western wall whs u?ed. The crews in the first heat were:—V. MacFarlane, L. Lambie, K. Douglas, N. Bellamy; F. G. Bowling, J. H. Parsons, _R. Notton, E. MacPherson. Iji an interesting contest' MacFarlane was successful by two lengths. Crews in the second heat were:— M. H. D. Conway, J. Poland, E. Rockel and R. Allum; J. H. Donovan, E. Such, L. R. McDonald and L. Fearon. Donovan led nearly all the way and won by a length. After an even contest to midway in the final MacFarlane took tho lead and prevailed by half a length in a stirring finish. BIGELOW FARRELL CUP The West End Club also held n eeries of elimination events during tho week to decide possession of tho Blgelow Farrell Cup for handicap single eculls. Good water conditions were experienced in deciding tho events. The semi-finalists were;— M._ H. D. Conway (ecr). F. Conway (Is'), J. ISsewconibe (9?) and R. Allum (10s). In the semifinals R. Allum and J. NeWcombe defeated M. Conway and F. Conway respectively, while tho final went to Allum after a determined challenge by Newcombo had failed. i ST. GEORGE'S OLUB INTERESTING TRIAL FOURS During the week-end the St. George's Rowing Club conducted trial fours for the Sir James Coates Cup and oap9, on the waterfront road course. Four crews competed, a feature being that all were regatta men. Keen raqing resulted, two heats and a final deciding tho issue. A crew stroked by W J. Dean was successful in a closelycontested final. The crews in the initial heat were:—A. ,7. Slyfield, P. R. Pike. 11. Tong, G. H. Clay; W. J. Dean, C. D'Authreau, S. B. Sheath, D. Malthus. Each crew had a turn in the lead and in a good finish Dean prevailed by half a canvas. In the second heat the ciews comprised:—J. R. H. Biss, I. C. Horton. H. St. C. Brown. D. Woollams; W. L. Carr, F. Solomon, C. Billiard, G. M. Brown. This was ft good race, Biss's lively crew winning by half a length from Carr, who was particularly unfortunate since his coxswain covered an unnecessary amount of water. In the final Biss made most of the pace and led almost throughout. In a close finish, however. Dean came up to secure the judge's verdict by a foot. Mr. A. G. Rickard was judge. I —. NORTH SHORE CLUB W. J. DEAN'S CREW WINS Contrary to the experience of oarsman on tho city side of the harbour on Saturday, North Shore enthusiasts experienced comparatively good water conditions. Subscription trials weTe consequently by three crews, and a course from North Head to tho clubhouse was followed. The racing was not confined to club members ; two visiting Wellington oarsmen, Messrs. K. and T. Boswell, of the Petone Rowing: Club, patticipating. The former is a member of the Wellington provincial eight, in which crew ho occupies the No. 6 Scat. Also competing was W. J. Dean, captain of the club last year, but this season stroke of the St. Georee'g senior four. Ho was successful in stroking the winning crew. Mr. B. Rutledge acted as judge. In the initial heat. W. J. Dean. G. Bacon, C ' Willetts, and Baker met K, Boswell, Vowles, Mallett and Coleman. After Dean had been leading for some time Boswell drew level, and an evert r&ce ensued. Dean, however, went ahead at the finish, and won bv half a length. The final saw W. J. Dean's crew meet Korn, H. Judkins, W. Walsh and T. Boswell, who had drawn the bye. This was »n exciting contest, Dean forging ahead at the end to win by barely a length.
