WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED SUBSIDY TO BE GRANTED [from our own" correspondent] TAURANGA, Saturday The Tauranga Borough Council has received a letter from Mr. W. Bromley, for the Commissioner of Unemployment, in reply to the council's request as to whether the Unemployment Board would be prepared to grant a subsidy on the labour cost of the proposed waterworks scheme. Mr. Bromley advised that for each registered and eligible unemployed married man engaged for full-time work at standard rates of pay, a subsidy equal to 50 per cent of the wages cost would be granted, but no subsidy would be paid for work in excess of eight hours in any one day. or in excess of five days in any one week. The maximum subsidies were: —Married man, with wife only, '2os a week; married man, with wife and one child. 22s fid a week; married man, with wife and two children, 25s a week; married man. with wife and three or more children, 30s a week.
In reply to the council's inquiry as to whether the subsidy would be affected if the work were carried out by contract instead of day labour. Mr. Bromley stated that arrangements could be made with the contractor to employ only local unemployed men. The council has decided to reply that it is prepared to accept the subsidy, and will proceed with the waterworks scheme as soon as it is sanctioned by the ratepayers.
