YOUTHS' WORLD TOUR
BICYCLES AND TRAILER INGENIOUS HAULAGE PLAN NEW ZEALANDERS 1 VENTURE An ambitions world tour on bicvclos with a trailer is planned by two Wellington youths. George Cobbe and Cyril Cox. both aged 18 years, who were in Auckland yesterday Tn tbe course of a tour of the North Island they left Auckland on their return to Wellington shortly before noon, having been as far north as Wellsford. Owing to the approach of winter the two adventurers will not visit the South Island, as. they had originally intended, but will go from Wellington to Newcastle to continue their tour through Australia. Afterward other countries will be visited
The sight of the two bicycles, which are ridden side by side with the single shaft of the trailer attached by means of swivel gear between the machines, attracted considerable attention in the city yesterday. The bicycles are not held rigidly together, the swivel apparatus allowing them to be ridden more or less independently. When excessively narrow roads are encountered, the cycles are placed in tandem, with the trailer attached to the rear one. When travelling down very steep hills, one machine is used behind the trailer to permit of greater braking control. Owing to the fact that 2cwt. of camping and other material is carried in the trailer the rate of travel is not very fast. Before their departure yesterday the two youths had covered 1122 miles since setting out from Wellington on October 3 of last year, stops having been made at various pliices where work was obtained. When on the road the bicycles average about 30 miles a day, the longest run in a single day on the tour being 60 miles.
