SWIMMING RECORDS SUCCESS OF JAPANESE The frequency with which Japanese Bwimmors have been breaking world's records in recent months is dno to the fact their swims havo been done over short courses. Japan wanted it ma do compulsory for world's records to be established only in baths 50 metres or more in length, but its proposal was rejected. So the Japanese resolved to copy other nations by making all their record swims over courses of the minimum length allowed by the International Federation —25 yards for distances in yards, and 25 metres for distances in metres. The strongest opposition to raising the limit was made by the United States, whose records, with a few exceptions, were all set over 25yard courses. By playing havoc with records, Japan bas gained much sympathy for its case, and it is considered that the federation may soon place the limit above 25 yards and 25 metres.
