AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS CARNIVAL TO-MORROW NIGHT KEEN INTEREST AROUSED The likelihood of tlio holders of the 100 yds. men's and ladies' 'swimming championships, R. Tliomas and Miss 51. Farquhar, being defeated lias aroused extraordinary interest in the Auckland championship carnival, which will be held in the Tepid Baths . to-morrow evening. Thomas will be opposed by the Now Zealand champion, It. Frankham, W. Wharoaitu, runner-up in the last national championship, and tho Dominion intermediate champion, N. Crump, will be having his first race in senior ranks. Frankham and Crump havo been showing the most impressive form lately, and either is expected to win a closely-contested race in time that may lower tho Australian as well as the New Zealand record. To defeat Misses B. Lewin and S. Grango Miss Farijuhar will have to equal her NewZealand record at least. Miss Lew in, in par titular, has been sprinting spleudidly, and was aeoond to the Australian champion Miss Frances Bult, in the recent tost race. Frankham. Crump and Thomas should have » thrilling race for the 220 yds men's title, and in the ladies' contest at the same distance Mies M, Leydon has bright prospects of taking the titlo from Miss Farquhar. There will be five other championship contests and most should be won in record time. As usual, a number of handicap events will be decided. OXiUB COMPETITIONS PONSONBY AND PAR NELL Points competitions for club members were continued by the Ponsonby and Parnell Amateur Swimming Clubs at the Shelly Beach and Parnell Baths respectively ou Saturday afternoon. Watching the races was an interesting diversion for the many bathers at each pool. The speedy Parnell sprinter S. Lazarus won the 50 metres championship of his club from P. RIFLE SHOOTING AUCKLAND CITY CLUB The second round of the Auckland City Defence Club's service championship was fired -under qualification conditions at Penrose rang© on Saturday. The weather was ideal and some fine performances wore recorded. H. Simmonds made 147 points out of a possible 150, and equalled the range record established under eimiliar conditions by C. J. M. AKARANA DEFENCE CLUB Owing to unfavourable weather conditions in the past the Akarana. Rifle Club, in order to make up lost shoots,' fired two competitions over the ranges of 500. 600. and 200 and 300 yards respectively. Good shooting was recorded in both matches. The most outstanding performance on the day was that of R. Wakefield, who registered 98 out of a possible 100 points.
