MEAT IN LONDON

FROZEN AND CHILLED SMITHFIELD QUOTATIONS (Received February 4, 5.5 pm.) LONDON, Feb. 3 Following are the latest quotations for frozen and chilled meat, with those of the previous week for comparison:

BABBITS First, large, ex store .. 19/ to 19/6 19/ The weekly quotations are based on actual sales of wholesale quantities of carcases of mutton or lamb or of quarters of beef .delivered to Smithfield market and/or London stores. They are compiled by the Quotations Committee, Smithfield. To arrive at the equivalent ex ship values one farthing per pound should be deductod from tho prices quoted above. Quotations given represent the average for the week, and are not selected lines, but for parcels fairly representative of the bulk of shipments now on offer. LAMB PRICES EASIER The Bank of New Zealand has received " tho following advice from its London office as at the close of business last week. Wethers: The demand and prices are steady. Ewes: There is a moderate demand. Prices are firm. Lambs: The market is inclined to bocome weaker. Supplies aro more than sufficient to meet the demand. Trade, generally, is slow. Wethers, light, sid to 6d per lb.; heavy, 4£d to sgd; ewes, 3fd to 4sd; lambs, twos, 7£d to 7£d; eights, 7}d to fours, 7;ld to seconds, 6|d to 6-Jd.

The New Zealand Meat Producers' Board has received tho following cablegram from its London house, dated February 2:—Lamb: Prices have eased slightly owing to heavier arrivals, but the tone of the market is good and consumption satisfactory. Mutton: Wethers and ewes continue very firm, with better prices, owing to extremely short spot stocks. Beef: Consumption still ' continues good. New Zealand porkers: Prices easier owing to heavier arrivals and increased supplies from tho United States of America. New Zealand baconers: Firm, with better prices. Tho demand is good.

LOCAL EXPORT SCHEDULE Current export schedule rates for stock on hooks at freezing works are as follows: Lambs.—36lb. and under, 7\d per lb.; 371b. to 421b., 7d; over 421b., 6sd; seconds, 6Jd. Mutton: Wethers: Up to 481b., 4fd per lb.; 491b. to 561b., 4|d; 571b. to 641b., 4|d; 651b. to 721b., 3jd; over 721b., 3£d; seconds, 3|d. Ewes (in same classes), 3jd, 2|d, 2£d, 2|d, 2£d and 2Jd respectively. Beef.—Prime ox, 16s per 1001b.; boner bulls, 12s 6d; cows. 7s to 7s 6d per 1001b. Pigs.—Dp to 801b., s id to 5Jd per lb.; 811b. to 1001b., 4Jd to 4Jd; 1011b. to 1201b., 4d to lid; 1211b. to 1601b., 4 id.

FLAX GRADINGS FICURES FOR JANUARY A total of 1932 bales of hemp was graded for export at New Zealand ports during January, a decrease of 592 bales on the quantity graded in January, 1933, and of 494 bales on the gradings in December, 1933. The quantities graded at the respective ports were: — Wellington, 992 bales; Bluff, 472; Auckland, 402; Picton, 48; Blenheim, 18. Tho hemp was graded as follows, the figures for the corresponding month of the previous year being given in parentheses: —Fine, 16 ( —); good fair, 236 (356); high fair, 554 (600); low fair, 422 (800); common, 462 (479); reject, 2-12 (289). - A decrease of 307 bales is shown in the figures of tow gradings, which totalled 280 bales, as against 587 bales in .January, 1933. Compared with the total of December gradings there was a decrease of 419 bales. The gradings at the ports were: —Wellington, 188 bales; Auckland, 46; Picton, 26; Bluff, 20. The tow comprised:—First grade, 52 (199); second,-165 (217); third, 2] (135); condemned, 42 (36). There were no returns of stripper tow and stripper slips.
