SPORT WITH TROUT
SOME GOOD CATCHES LAKE TAUPO WATERS [BY TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT] TOKAANU, Friday This has been the best week's sport afforded anglers for some time. The recent rains, while not being nearly sufficient to create a fresh in the Tongariro River, resulted in many fish inhabiting the shallower waters in the vicinity of the Asher's Delta Camp and the four immediate rivermouths, where the rips have now developed splendidly owing to the low lake levels. Some excellent baskets have been taken., the best being that by Mr. H. Duff. This was nine splendid fish averaging 7slb., which were landed at the first mouth in loss than an hour one morning. Mr. Duff also secured a beautiful steel head at the Delta Camp. It turned the scales at 111b. Conditions are excellent for fly fishers at these mouths, which most of the anglers visit. Overseas visitors have included Messrs. Peart and Moeran, of Bristol. Sir Walter Windham enjoyed a day's trolling and the Earl of Wemyss and Lady Angela St. Clair Erskine are returning. Many other distinguished visitors are expected. The ranks of new adherents to tho sport are being daily increased. Trolling is particularly popular owing to fish being so plentiful. Further rains would result in.the fish moving up the Tongariro River from tho lower reaches, where they are abundant. Tho condition of tho fish is not consistent with statements regarding a shortage of fish food. There is evidence almost everywhere of unlimited fresh-water snails and other natural fish food, together with a general improvement in the natural feeding beds, particularly around the numerous bays at the southern end of the lake.
