EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of February 4, 1884: The White Star Line's magnificent steamer, the Doric, came into harbour yesterday afternoon from London bringing general cargo anjl 198 passengers, and between 300 and 400 immigrants for Southern ports. The immigrants are a fine lot of people. The men are classed principally as artisans, and the woman as domestic servants. The news that the steamer had arrived quickly circulated in the town and in a very short space of time the wharf was crowded with people anxious to get a glimpse of the magnificent ship. Correspondence from Fiji states that a formal communication has been received there from the Premier of New Zealand, acknowledging receipt of the petition designating New Zealand as the t:olony to which the settlers of Fiji desire to be attached, and asking for assistance to effect such a union. Major Atkinson promises to lay the petition before his colleagues, and to communicate further with representatives of the colonists. The annual meeting of the Henderson'!?, Mill Jockey Club was held on January 1$ in the Auckland Racing Club's office. Mr. Thomas Henderson, the treasurer, presented the financial report. Total receipts were shown at £407 and tbj expenditure left a balance of £24. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr. Thomas Henderson, sen..; rice-president. Mr. A. K. Taylor; judge, Mr. W. J. Hurst, M.tLR.; -stewards and committee, Messrs. T. Morri:ti, J. Bennett. J. Kirkwood, J. Marshall, J. Malani, T. Henderson, J. Smythe and J. Archibald; clerk of the course, Mr. R. E. Isaacs; starter, Mr. J. Archibald.
