RINGED WITH FLAMES
> FIGHT TO SAVE TOWN J : ___ DAYS AND NIGHTS OF TERROR Residents of Fitzgerald, in Tasmania, recently have spent days and nights of terror fighting bush fires. Tho township, which had a population of SOO, was surrounded by flames, which, fanned by a strong gale, had swept upon it. The townspeople abandoned their homes, the men organising to fight the fire. Hundreds of millworkers and others failed to prevent the flames reaching a large timber mill on the outskirts of the township. The mill was razed, 800,000 ft. of seasoned timber were burned, while flames leaped over 100 ft. into the air and swept along to destroy six houses and their contents. When the flames were at their frorst; and it seemed that the township would be demolished, the women and children were placed on an allotment near the railway line, and a special train from Hobart waited in case a general evacuation should be necessary, hut the rest of the town was eventually saved.
