PERMANENT WAVE
WOMAN'S ALL-NIGHT ORDEAL £2O DAMAGES AWARDED • A woman's " permanent wave " was discussed at Bow County Court, London, recently, when Judge Owen Thompson awarded £2O general damages, 10s as two days' loss of earnings, and costs, in a claim by Florence Terrell, wife of a steeplejack, against a firm of hairdressers. Mrs. Terrell, said at 7.30 p.m. one Saturday a male assistant of defendants' began her permanent wave. He was having an argument with the manager about his dismissal and when the wave was half-finished he was paid bis wages and left. A female assistant took on the work, but at three a.m. on Sunday she (plaintiff) could stand it no longer, for the hair, on being combed., " came out by handfuls." Then she went home. Her head was painful and a doctor said she had an inflamed scalp. ' A partner of th-> firm said a normal head of hair took three to three and ahalf hours to permanently wave, but plaintiff's took four and a-half to five hours because the hair was long. The woman assistant said she was for two years in the London County Council hairdressing school and received iwo diplomas. She was put on plaintiff's waving just after nine p.m., after the male assistant had been on it one and a-half hours. She found he had wound the hair on the curlers too thickly, which prevented it going through the machine, but there could have been no damage. Witness finished about 1.30 a.m. In-giving judgment the judge said he accepted plaintiff's evidence that s her hair was seriously damaged.
