THE WAIHI MINE

REGENT DEVELOPMENTS GOOD ORE UNCOVERED REVIEW BY MANAGER [by TELKGRAi'H —OWN COKHESPONDENI] "WAIHI, Friday Interesting features in connection with development works carried out in the Waihi mine during the past few months vrere touched on to-day by the mine manager, Mr. J. L. Gilmour, in the course of an interview. " -Reference was first made by Mr. Gilmour to the progress in the south-east prospecting crosscut from the Grand Junction No. 6 level, which corresponds with the Waihi mine's No. 11 level, where a reef was recently met with afc . 347 ft., the width of the ore body being Bft. and its course 50 degrees at true meridian and the dip one in 2j north from tho vertical. The first 2ft. assayed 3s a ton and the last 6ft. 4s. The crosscut is beinp continued, but so far nothing further has been met with. A small leader was met within the main crosscut at 250 ft. and, carrying favourable indications, was driven on at 70ft. west, where it joined part of the Royal lode, the width of which was rather over 3ft. It was worth 6s 6d a ton. A crosscut- was also driven south at the same point, and at 20ft. in the second part of the Royal lode was cut. This proved to be lift, wide, the first 2ft. assaying 17s 9d and the remaining 9ft. 2s 9d. Driving west on the second portion is now proceeding and a strong body of ore of low value is being fol-' lowed, the average for 'the first 24ft. being 4s 3d a ton. Passing from the south-east prospecting cro'iscut, Mr. Gilmour said, the most interesting point of development . at the moment was that on the» north branch of the Martha lode away to the north of No. 2 shaft, discovered last year at No. 3 level. The vein was driven on for 109 ft. west, and eastward .to 100 ft. east of Wallace's north-westi crosscut in good grade ore of a widtK of 3ft. B£in. The lode is now being stoped. Immediately following the discovery and the disclosure of high grade ore work was commenced in the lower levels to pick up the north branch of the Martha lode. At No. 4 level an ore body was met with in what is called the Gordon northwest crosscut. Here 108 ft. was .driven west and 104 ft. east, all in good grade ore with an average width of Just over 2ft. Driving at these points is being continued. At No. 5 level a much longer distance had to be driven on account of: t,he ore chute dipping west. The good ore was picked up at 120 ft. west of Roccroft's north-west crosscut, where the lode is higher in value, and 400 ft. has been driven in good grade ore, the width varying from l£ft. to 4ft. in a good class or country. The drive to the west is still being advanced in good grade ore. At 294 ft, the south crosscut is being continued along the course of the Martha lode for ventilation purposes. A long drive is now being projected on No. 6 level to pick up the same quartz body, and has been advanced rather over 200 ft. from the old workings. The lode should be met with at any moment. _ The investigation of the main Martha reef at No. 5 level is showing interesting features. The lode is being driven on west of No. 2 shaft on the new north-west crosscut. Low values were _ met with up to 448 ft., but payable ore came in at this point, andirom 448 ft," to 485 ft. milling quartz over a width of about 6ft. has been continued. CRUSHING RETURNS PAST MONTH'S OPERATIONS [by telegraph —OWN correspondent] WAIHI, Friday The following information has been cabled to the London' office of the Waihi Gold Mining Company, Limited:— For the period ended January 20, ; comprising 13 crushing days, 11,197 tons of ore were crushed for a result of 3414 fine ounces of gold and 18,210 fine ounces of silver. The crushing includes 1253 tons mined from the Grand Junction area, which yielded 383 ounces of gold and 1366 ounces of - silver. No. 4 Level.—North branch 'of the Martha lode: Driving east, the nexp 40ft. i:s ore of good grade. The lode is about 2ft. wide. Edward lode: This was intersected at about 90ft. south of the Lovatt crosscut, the width being oft., and the assay value 66s a ton. Driving south has been done on t-hia lode for 51ft., the average width being 2£ft., and tha value 62s a ton. No. 5 Level.—North branch of the Martha lode: Driving west, the next 47ft. iis ore of good grade, the width of the lode varying from lift, to 4ft. We are now cross-cutting south' at 294 ft. Martha lode: Driving west, the next lift, assays 3s 9d a ton, ?nd the next 6ft-. 24s 9d a ton. No. 6 Level.—The prospecting crosscut to intersect the north branch of the Martha lode is 310 ft. west .of No. 2 shaft. New north-west At 234 ft. there is quartz 18in. wide, as-, saying 43s 6d a ton. No. 12 Level. —Royal lode:,. Driving east the next 47ft. assays os 9d a ton. At 447 ft. tho lode is 2Sft. wide and the first sft. assays lis 3d a ton, the next 4ft. 34s 9d a ton, and the last 19ft. 7s 6d a ton. Grand Junction, No. 6 Level. —South-' east prospecting crosscut: The next 25ft. lis country rock.
