COSMIC RAYS

LOCAL RECORDING STATION WORLD-WIDE RESEARCH A cosmic ray recording station is to" be established in Auckland by the Carnegie Institution, probably in about six months' time. Professor Burbidge, who has just returned to Auckland, learned this from the authorities of the Carnegie Institution at "Washington. Cosmic rays, he explained, are the recently discovered very penetrating rays that have been found to reach the earth and seem to come from outward space. The study of them'is being vigorouslv prosecuted in most of the physical laboratories of the world, and world surveys, like that which recently brought Professor A. E*. Compton to New Zealand, are being undertaken with a view to solving the problem' of their nature and their origin. The establishment of recording stations to take continuous records will help in this direction. The recent sensational balloon ascents into the stratosphere have been made largely in the hope of discovering more about the cosmic rays. Professor Burbidgo says he hopes to arrange for high aeroplane flights for the purpose of measuring cosmic ray variation.
