AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS
ANNUAL TOURNEY OPENED PLAY INTERRUPTED BY RAIN The annual Auckland provincial, lawn tennis championship tournament was commenced at the Stanley Street courts yesterday morning in dull and windy weather. Jtain set in just after lunch time and caused a postponement of piny until this morning. Not many of the better-known players were seen in action yesterday morning.
C. J. Douohoe, Australia, defeated S. Lamb in straight sets, while N. Cr. Sturt had a similar victory over A. Porter. J. L. Stovens did well to take the second eet from J. C. Charters, who won tho North Island championship at Rotorua last week. An interesting match was witnessed in the ladies' singles between Miss N. Beverley, Matamata, and Mrs. W. J. Melody, Wellington, the first-named prevailing by two sets to one. Miss B. Knight had a, comfortable win over Miss G. Gardner.
