EARLY MORNING ARREST
INCIDENT AT MISSION BAY MAGISTRATE ADJOURNS CASE Having been arrested at Mission Bay at an early hour yesterday morning, Arthur Herbert Eden, . aged 53, described as a mechanic and shopkeeper, later appeared in the Police Court on charges of being disorderly while drunk and of using indecent language. He was represented by Mr. Gatenby and pleaded not guilty. Sergeant Dunn said that as the result of complaints from residents of .Mission Bay he and Constable _ McCurragh proceeded to that district shortly after midnight and interviewed accused, who lived in a tent on a property which he owned. When spoken to by witness accused immediately wanted to fight and started shouting at the top of his voice. Mr. Gatenby: Would you say he was drunk? Witness: He was mad drunk. We had to put him in a padded cell after we got him to tho central police station.
Corroborative evidence was given by Constable McCurragh. Accused, in evidence, denied the allegations, and said that until the arrival of the police "everything was nice and quiet" and he was sleeping souiidly. He said the police dragged him away from his home without even permitting him to don warm clothing and shoes, and when he was charged at the station the police declined to get him a doctor, although he had sufficient money to pay the fee. Witness also said it was not true that other residents of Mission Bay had made complaints to tho police about him.
In order that the police might have an opportunity of calling further evidence to refute allegations made by accused, the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., adjourned the case until to-morrow. Accused was allowed bail of £lO.
