EAST COAST CHARGES

FURTHER REMANDS GRANTED COMPANY MANAGER AND CLERK [by TELEGRAPH OWN" correspondent] GISBORNE, Wednesday Further remands wore granted when Charles Goldsmith, company manager, and Henare Poananga appeared before Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., at the quarterly sittiug of the Magistrate's Court at Port Awanui this morning on charges of fraud and theft respectively. Goldsmith, formerly manager of the Waiapu Farmers' Co-operative Company, Limited, Tikitiki, who was arrested on December 8 and remanded until to-day, was charged that on or about June 6, 1933, at Tikitiki, with intent to defraud, he obtained from H. J. Fletcher, postmaster at Tikitiki, the sum of £BO, the property of the New Zealand Government Maori Unemployment Relief Fund, by falsely representing that one, Wi Matahiki, had been employed on certain work under the Maori Unemployment Relief Fund. Poananga, who was arrested on December 20, and was also remanded until to-day, was charged that, on or about June 13, 1933, at Ruatoria, being a clerk in the employ of the Native Lands Department, he did steal the sum of £6 3s 6d, the property of that department.

When the cases were called this morning Detective McLeod, of Gisborne, made formal application for Goldsmith to be remanded to appear at Gisborne on January 25.

Mr. A. A. Whitehead, counsel for accused, raised no objection and a remand was granted. Bail was allowed as formerly in the sum of £SOO in accused's recognisance, together with one surety of an equal amount. In respect of the charge against Poananga, who also was represented by Mr. Whitehead, the magistrate, on Detective McLeod's application, remanded accused to appear at Ruatoria on January 25. In his case also bail was allowed as formerly in the sum of £IOO in accused's own recognisance, and one suretv of £IOO.
