SUPPLIES BY AIR
SEAPLANE'S RUSH TRIP
AUCKLAND TO DUN.EDIN
BYRD EXPEDITION'S NEEDS
MAKING UP FOR TIME LOST
Tho late arrival of the motor-ship Ashburton, which has among its cargo supplies for the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, has delayed the departure of the supply ship Bear of Oakland from Dunedin. Tho Ashburton was originally scheduled to reach Auckland from New York on Sunday, but did not arrive until yesterday morning. Some of the supplies on the ship are urgently needed by the expedition, and following communications with Dunedin, the local agents for the expedition, Speddings, Limited, have arranged for the essential supplies to be taken to Dunodin by air as soon as they are unloaded.
The trip will be made by the Fairey 11IE seaplane, from the Hobsonville air base, which will have its floats replaced by landing wheels for the journey. About 11001b. of supplies will be carried, comprising clothing such as jackets, woollen shirts and special boots for wear in tho Antarctic, and a number of parts for the expedition's tractors. It is not expected that tho supplies required will be unloaded before tomorrow morning, and the machine will leave immediately they are available, as they must be in Dunedin by to-morrow night.
A considerable quantity of foodstuffs, clothing and supplies other than those to be taken by air also are on the Ashburton, and they will be sent to Dunedin by the quickest method available, but it is posaible that the Bear of Oakland will have to sail without them.
