EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of January 1», Te Kooti, with a following of about 150 natives, arrived at Waihi, about a mile from Maketu, on Sunday afternoon, where they purposed camping until Monday morning, when they would appear before Maketu, ana a great tangi would follow, weeping for the memories of the past. At Te Matata the Arawas residing there, with portions of the Ngatiawas living in the neighbourhood, received Te Kooti with every demonstration of respect. W hen at ie Matata the party were met by Captain Mair, who displayed his generosity to his subdued foes by entertaining them with refreshments. Te Kooti looks very much depressed and cast down. He seems to have little life or energy left in him. . , „ Yesterday a deputation, of the Harbour Board and City Council had art interview with the Under-Secretary for Public Works respecting the frontage ot the new railway station. As the public are aware, the Government have planned the frontage in a wav different from that which the Harbour Board and Citv Council desire, who naturally wish it to front Queen" Street.,, The UnderSecretary stated that the suggestions ot the deputation would be considered by the department. ~ The land section of the Tiritiri cable line of telegraphic communication, namely, from AVhangaparaoa to Waiwera, will be completed in a day or two. « oric commences this week on the lintiri island section from the lighthouse to the beach, where it will join the cable.
