CARNIVAL AT MOUNT EDEN FIFTY YARDS CHAMPIONSHIP. NARROW WIN FOR FRANKHAM The 50yds men's championship of Auckland, which was the chief event.' decided at the Mount Eden Amateur Swimming Club's carnival in the Mount Eden Baths last evening, was won by the 100 yds champion of New Zealand, R. Frankham. His time, 25 l-ss, although not a record, was exceptionally fast. It was a great race. The intermediate champion, N. Crump, eeemed to bo a littlo ahead of Frankham at, the end of the first lap. However, on pushing off from the turn. Crump caught an arm in the rope lane, 'and the hindrance was enough to allow Frankham to dash ahead and win by a foot.

The carnival was opened by the Mayor of Mount Eden, Mr. T. McNab. who is t*-e president of the Mount Eden Club. He said that Mount Eden was fortunate in having a live swimming club, and that the credit for its success was due mainly tj the honorary secretary, Mr. H. Moore. Keen competition held the , interest .of about 500 spectators. The national lady champion, Miss Mona Leydon, won tho first heat of the 220 yds open handicap ia „ 2m 49 l-ss, time close to her best. . Amongher opponents in the final was. D. P.Lindsay, Hawke's Bay, the. Dominion men's champion over 440 yds, SSOyds and one mile, who conceded her 20s start. Lindsay overtook her a- few yards from the rope, and in a very exciting finish gained victory by a foot. Apart from thewin by tho junior girl champion of Auckland, Miss G. Priestley, in the 66 2-3yda ladies' handicap, the race was marked byfast- sprinting by Misses E. Rainey. .-M--. Farquhar, B. Lewin, and by Miss i. Grange in particular. High-class diving was done by the competitors in the diying event, first place being awarded to tho Auckland champion, W.
