Nov. 12 Three by-elections, one Federal and two State, were held in Victoria ycstcrTho Federal contest was for the Flinders seat, rendered vacant by Mr. S. M. Brace's appointment as High Commissioner in London. It resulted in an overwhelming victory for the United Australia Party's candidate, Mr. .lames V. Fairbairn, who at present has a majority of 13,000 over the official Labour candidate, Mr. Arthur Haywood. with only 10,000 votes to come. Mr. Fairbairn formerly was a member of the Victorian Assembly. Tho Allendale State by-election due to the 'death of Sir Alexander Peacock, former Speaker of tho Assembly, will be won by his widow, Lady Millie Gertrude Peacock Australia Party), who has a majority of 1186 with only 500 votes outstanding. Lady Peacock's opponent is Mr. William Me Adam (Labour). The other State by-election is at Warrnambool. The result is not so clear there owing to the presence of two antiLabour ami two Labour candidates, one of whom is an Independent Labour candidate. Voting at present is as tollowk: — Henry Bailey (Independent Lab.) 3372 Keith McGarvie (United Australia Party) 2704 Robert Glasgow (United Country Party) . . • • • • • • 2073 Frederick Gill (Official Labour) 1-152 The poll for the Flinders seat in the Federal Parliament at the general elections in December, 1931, resulted: —S. M. Bruce (United Australia Party), 45,304; A. IL Haywood (Labour), 21,004. The Allendale poll in tho Victorian election of May 14. 1932, resulted in the return of the late Sir Alexander Peacock unopposed. The Warrnambool poll at the same election resulted: —J. V. Fairbairn (United Australia Party), 6060; H. S. Bailey (Independent Labour), 4936.
