Large Staff at Work

THE expansion of the Xkw Z'kai.and Herald and Auckland Weekly News is impressivolv reflected in the numerical growth oi' the staff. Employed in the production of the two journals, daily and weekly, and in tlie commercial printing works are 7-17 )>ersoiis. Twenty years ago the wages books showed 507 names and 10 years ago 621 names. Thus, in spite of the depression and the introduction of many new labour-saving machines, enabling fewer men to cope with larger tasks, the printing business established at the Herald office is to-dav giving employment for 120 more persons 1 than was the case 10 years ago. The number of employees who have long periods of service with the Herald is surprisingly large in a day when change and restlessness are such widespread peculiarities of our social life. Ten years ago there were 28 employees with over 2-3 years' unbroken service to their credit; to-day there are A2 in that category —a striking commentary on the longevity and loyalty of the Herald's employees. Taylor . . 25 The most striking example of long and meritorious service is that of Mr. A. 1). 13nice, tho veteran racing writer who, when he retired in 1930, had completed no less than 64 years' continuous service with the paper. Although, by reason of his retirement, his name does neb appear in the list published above, his penname of " Phaeton" still appears regularly in the columns of the Herald, for " Archie," ns he is affectionately known, declines to bo idle, at the age of 78, and proudly carries on tho racing tradition he established in the Herald in ISSO. By tho institution of tho Wilson and Hortori Staff Provident Association, a fund has been established out of which employees on retirement will draw amounts in proportion to the period of membership and the weekly contributions, which aro liberally subsidised by the company. The Provident Fund was inaugurated in January, 1931, and at the end of the second year there were 375 contributors, and accumulated funds amounted to £9960. At the name time a separate fund was created by tho company to provide pensions on retirement for employees who had then long service records.
