ST. GEORGE TEAM WINS MARGIN OF SEVEN POINTS NEWTON SUFFERS DEFEAT The visiting St. George Rugby League team defeated Newton by 30 points to '23 in an open game played at Carlaw Park yesterday afternoon. There was a fair attendance. St. George was clearly the superior side in the first half and gained a comfortable lead, but both teams made many mistakes. Newton rallied splendidly and actually led four minutes before the final whistle. A brilliant solo try by Daley, the St. George five-eighths, gave the visitors the advantage. Another try was scored just on time. The Newton forwards played splendidly, but the visitors' backs had too much speed in passing movements. A reliable placekick would have won the game for Newton. Carey, kicked six goals for St. George. Daley was perhaps the best of the visitors' backs, although he held on several times after making good openings. Robinson played soundly at fullback. Killiby was the beat forward on the ground. Sprouster and Rice were also prominent. For Newton Dempsey played an outstanding game at fullback. Hall, Porteous and Nathan were also prominent. .Early in the game St. George backs started a promising passing bout, but Daley missed a good transfer and the visitors lost & try. Stevens male a nice run for Newton, only to kick when supported. A few minutes later Daly made a clever opening, but delayed a difficult transfer to Killiby, who fumbled, and a try was lost. Carey started a passing bout from Newton's twehty-five and Killiby beat the defence badly before passing to Fairall, who scored between the posts. Carey converted. St. George, 5; Newton, 0. Daley cut in nicely and passed to Killiby, who scored. Carey converted. St. George, 10; Newton, 0. Then Porteotis raced over, but a forward pass was ruled. Then Nathan scored a good try for Newton, Blacklaws failed to convert and the score was equal. The ball travelled to Stevens on the wing, whose pace carried him over in the corner. Dempsey failed to convert. Newton, 23; St. George, 20. Just when Newton appeared to hold the visitors, Daley scored a brilliant try and a minute later Sprouster scored from a nice passing bout. BENEFIT OF TOUR SHIELD PRESENTED The visiting St. George team was entertained at dinner last evening by the New Zealand Rugby League. The president, Mr. C. A. Snedden, said the team had shown a sporting spirit worthy of Australia. The football displayed in Auckland was of a very good standard and he was certain the code here would benefit aa the result of the tour. Mr. Snedden paid a tribute to the coach of the St. George team, Mr. R. Johnson. and to the manager, Mr. J. H. Mostyn. Mr. Mostyn, in thanking the New Zealand League for its hospitality, said the standard of club football in Auckland compared very favourably with that of New South Wal°s. The coach, Mr. R. Johnson, referred to the impartial control of yesterday's game by the referee. Mr. L. Bull. At til* close of the dinner Mr. K. Wamsley presented to the St. George tesm a> handsome engraved shield, made by himself, for annual competition between clubs from Sydney and the Auckland Province. SAT u H DAY'S ARR AN G EMENTS The council of the New Zealand Rugby League at a special meeting last evening discussed arrangements for the final match between St. Georgo and Richmond, to be played on Saturday. The secretary. Mr. W. O. Carlaw, said the Wanganella would leave Auckland on Saturday at 5 p.m. and it was decided to commence the game at 2.45 p.m. Mr. M. Wetherill was appointed referee. , ... A 100 yds. championship race will_ bo decided prior to the match. Each senior club will nominate two representatives. The St. Georgo club intends to race against local players.
