FOOTBALL FIGHT

PLAYERS AND SPECTATORS BOOTS AND FISTS USED Spectators and footballers became involved in a fight in •which boots and fists were freely used in "Wiley's Park, Lakemba. on September 23, says the Sydney Morning Herald. The incident was the culmination of a rough game between Rugby League teams; from Campsie and Punchbowl. The police state that neither they nor the park committee knew that the match was being played, and consequently no policeman was on duty at the match. The game was witnessed by 300 or 400 spectators. It was rough from the beginning and feeling ran high among players and spectators. One team had a lead of nine points to nil, when several players began to exchange punches, and a fight developed between them. The referee intervened, but he was unable to stop the fight. )A number of spectators rushed on the field and a fierce fight followed. Several players and spectators received minor injuries, such as cuts, bruises and bleeding noses. The referee was escorted from the field. The Campsie police were notified of ' the fight and three constables went to the ground in a police car. When they arrived the fight had stopped, but the spectators were crowded about the dressing sheds. The police ordered the crowd away to prevent a further disturbance. . . One player was taken to a hospital in an ambulance to be treated for bruises to his forehead and a cut on his face. He said he did not know who had inflicted the injuries upon him.
