EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New v Zealand Herald of September 15, 1883: The Auckland railway station is one of those things of which we may well remark that hope deferred maketh the heart sick; but if; the rumour current is really true, then the heart of the people may well be very sick indeed. For it is said that instructions have come from Wellington to have inquiry made with reference to the propriety of having a wooden building erected tor the purposes of a railway station on the reclamation. We do not hesitate to direct public attention to the possibility of such a mischievous, proposal being carried out. , . A correspondent writes: 1 would asK through your columns whether the city engineer is aware of the way things are being done in Symonds Street. Some time ago the road scraper was set to work to scrape off the deep mud, and wayfarers rejoiced; but their rejoicings were premature, for the mud was simply left in a huge belt on either side of the road. The consequence was that where they waded through the street , ankle deep before, they subsequently had to wado through the mud bait con- ijg siderably more than ankle deep. Our Cambridge correspondent men- p tions that he was told by one of the Southern members of. Parliament that, fe during his visit to Auckland, he saw y • more business being done in Queen Street than he had seen in all the other cities in the colony.
