COMMERCE CONGRESS
IMPRESSIVE GATHERING DELEGATE FROM AUCKLAND A report of the l.'lth congress of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce of the British Empire, held in London in July, was given by Mr. F. N. Ambler to a meeting of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday. Mr. Ambler, who represented the chamber at the conference, was cordially welcomed back.
Mr. Ambler was much impressed by the efficiency and perfection of organisation of the conference. It was attended by 260 delegates from all parts of tils' Empire. Of the six Now Zealand delegates, who were accorded a central place of honour, four were residents of London. Every item on the agenda paper was carried unanimously. Sir Arthur Shirley Benn,. who presided, pnnedan ideal man for the position. New Zealand's remit, to provide safeguards against . dumping, which was combined with another similar remit, was one of the most discussed on the agenda, and the imposition of duties to counteract the effects of unfair competition was recommended. All speeches were short, sharp and to the point, and a spirit of the utmost harmony prevailed.
"I think it is a mistake," said Mr. Ambler, when referring to the. likelihood of the next of these conferences being held in New Zealand. "I think it should be held each time in the centre of the world, and that is London." The historic associations and atmosphere of a meeting place like the Guildhall meant much and it would be impossible to get to come to New Zealand such distinguished men as thoso who were delegates in London. "The whole thing was a wonderful experience," said Mr. Ainbler, "and the way they got through the business was a revelation."
The president, Mr. H. Turner, said the holding of such a conference in JN"ew Zealand would create a great deal of interest here, although it irj;ht not bo the best thing for the conference.
