STRANGE ROMANCE
SOLDIER AND NURSE MARRIAGE IN CANADA . VANCOUVER, Sept. 6 After having corresponded with each other for 19 .years, a Scottish nurse and a Scottish Canadian soldier met for the first time yesterday on the occasion of their wedding here. In 1914 the nurse, who was then working in a London hospital, slipped her name and address into the wrapper of a cake of soap which she contributed to a patriotic fund. The soldier, whose name is Christie, received it, and wrote to the donor. Thus was begun a remarkable romance. The nurse had recently been working in New York. Christie once figured in a sensational single-handed battle with a grizzly bear, which caught him unawares while he was prospecting in the Yukon. Remembering the advice of an Indian chief, he hugged the bear close, drew his knife, and gradually wore the bear down. He suffered terrible agony and privation for a week before he was able to get help. i Twice during the war Christie won decorations.
