UNION OF BOROUGHS
NORTH SHORE PROPOSAL CONFERENCE TO BE HELD MOVE BY BIRKENHEAD The North Shore Borough Councils are to be invited to ifleet in conference at Birkenhead on October 3 to discuss the desirability of the union of the four boroughs. The matter was introduced at a meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council last evening by Mr. J. McDonald, who suggested the position of the water supply alone warranted consideration of amalgamation. The Mayor, Mr. G. Mills: The Mayors of Northcote, Takapuna and Birkenhead were never so close together as they are now on that matter. The Mayor added that he would like to see all the small bodies around Auckland amalgamated with the city, but that seemed to be a matter for a commission to investigate. The difficulty was the financial positions of the different boroughs. The Government should send an expert on municipal finance to advise the various local ,bodies how loans and arrears of rates could be dealt with under amalgamation.
Mr. C. E. Campbell said the first necessity was for the councils concerned to affirm the principle of union.
