NATIVES AT %l IU E COMMISSIONER'S COMMENTS [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] - WELLINGTON, Wednesday The Resident Commissioner of Niue Island, Captain W. M. Bell, who has been on a short visit to New Zealand, left for Samoa and Niue by the Maui Pomare yesterday. Interviewed before his departure, Captain Bell emphasised the importance to these islands of the steamer connection afforded by the Maui Pomare, these and outlying islands having been compelled previously to depend on the uncertain visits of sailing vessels. Captain Bell stressed the good quality of the fruit, and the development that had taken place in production and export, and the bettered conditions of the inhabitants. He spoke in high terms of the industry of the natives and their law-abiding and loyal disposition.
