THE LEAGUE CODE

AUCKLAND TEAM WINS SOUTH SIDE DEFEATED HARD FORWARD EXCHANGES The return Rugby League match between Auckland and South Auckland, played at Carlaw Park on Saturday, 'resulted in a win for Auckland by 17 points to 5. When tho teams met previously South Auckland won on a heavy ground by 14 points to 0. In spite of rain for about half an hour before play commenced, tho ground was in fine'order, and there was a good attendance of spectators. For tho greater part of tho first spell play resolved itself into a hard battle between tho forward packs, and during this period tho South Auckland vanguard held the honours. It was successful in most of tlio scrums, thus succeeding in keeping tho ball away from tho Auckland backs, who as a combination wore always superior to tho visiting rearguard. This was clearly demonstrated in tho second spell, when the Auckland rearguard icceiyed many chances, due to the forwards playing together better. . In the early stages tho passing of tho Auckland backs was too slow to bavo any thrust, and tho visitors were able to check movements easily. This could bo accounted for to a great extent through Cooke receiving an injury to his log early in the game, as he was unable to move afterwards with any speed. A littlo later in the game Cooke had to retire with injuries to his chest. Ono of the most pleasing features of tho game was the success of L. Schultz, at second five-eighths, after being moved from tho wing. He played a clever and heady game, and was responsible for speeding up tho attacks and thus giving his outside men a fhanco to have pace on when receiving tho ball. Prentico Plays Well

Prentieo played a good game, ort attack and defence, and the try ho made for Donald after kicking the ball and gaining possession twice himself was a splendid individual effort. Hassan had a hard day behind the scrmn, but played well, getting the ball away very smartly. Brisbane was sound, and List cfid avoll on the wing after having played in a' curtain-raiser. Bright was dangerous in attacking movements. Campbell played his usual safe game at fullback.

The Auckland forwards took soma time to settle down, but especially in the second spell all played well. Campbell was responsible for a great deal of good defensive work, while the others were generally in the picture. Lawless was unable to play owing to an injury and was replaced by Leatherbarrow. A newcomer in Telford played a good game. South Auckland was unlucky on occasions not. to iegister tries, and there was not the difference between the teams indicated by the score. Both forwards and. backs executed several clever movements which deserved a better reward, and a little more polish to some of these, would have had the desired result. One fault was a tendency to overdo the reverse pass. The visitors fielded a fine pack which had plenty of dash nu d vigour, while the tackling Was good. The tackling of the inside backs was also very sound and nipped in the bud passing rushes of the opposition. G. Tittleton played well at fullback, and thrilled the spectators many times by running strongly in starting attacking movements from a defensive position. Promising Wing

H. Hill played a neat game on tho wing, bding an elusive runner with plenty of determination. Paki, on the other wing, was very weak, and poor play on his part cost tho team at least two tries. W. Tittleton, Peckham and Garry all played well individually, while Knight, at half, was also very sound. Auckland won the toss and immediately a loose forward rush led by Siddell took play to the Auckland line, where G. Tittleton was successful from a penalty. South Auckland, 2; Auckland, 0. The visitors were hooking the ball from the early scrums and making the game a forward one. South Auckland continued to worry tho local team in the loose. Slow passing by the Auckland backs enabled tho visitors toicover easily, and a counter-attack was s;Kyed by Cooko.'G. Tittleton then missed at goal from a penalty by inches. Penalties against Auckland held up tho forwards, while the backs had little speed in their attacking movements. Auckland set up a strong forward attack and the ball was sent out to the backs. Bright finishing off a nice movement with a try. Auckland, 3; South Auckland, 2.

Cooke Injured Fast play followed, both sides taking turns on attack, Auckland having tlie more polish to its back play. Cooke, \vho was' injured. early, received another bad knock and was attended to on tho line for several minutes. Flcmming was also injured and had to retire, being replaced by Jnckways. South Auckland kept the local team on defencb for a period, but could not break through. Cooke retired and was replaced by List, who played centre, and Brisbane second five-eighths. Schultz turned defence into attack cloverly and Auckland looked likely to score until a forward pass checked a fine movement. Just on half-time W. Tittleton and N. Campbell collided and were both injured. The interval camo with tho score: — Auckland . • • • • • 3 South .Auckland . . . . 2 On resuming, tho Auckland backs woro rearranged, Schultz playing second five-eighths and List on the wing. A nico movement between Prentice and SchultK nearly resulted in a try. South retaliated in a clever reverse passing movoment, which was spoiled by a forward transfer. South again attacked in a splendid passing bout and- just lost a try. Then Siddcll got over the line, but was held up. South maintained a strong pressure on tho Auckland line until a high kick beat G. Tittleton, and South lost considerable ground. Paki had his kick charged and Prentice picked up and dashed over wide out. Campbell failed to convert. Auckland, 6; South Auckland, 2. Splendid Tackle • G. Tittleton made plav well and Hill was lowered splendidly by Brisbane when in a good scoring position. List finished off a nice passing bout with a try at' the corner. Campbell failed to convert: Auckland, 9; South Auckland, 2. Bright next camo into tho picture by intercepting at halfway and outpacing the opposition to score behind the posts. Campbell converted. Auckland, 14; South Auckland, 2 % • South retaliated quickly, and wnon Prentico dropped his pass from Hassan, Peckham and Garry dashed in. ,Mcßurney carried on and scored near the posts. G. Tittleton missed the easy kick. Auckland, 14; South Auckland, 5. Good play by Prentico led, to the next try, Donald scoring on following through a kick. The scorer failed to convert. The game ended shortly afterwards, tho final score being:— Auckland 17 South Auckland . . • • 5 Mr. y. Simpson, was referee.
