Sent. 1 The finest August experienced in England for a century closed with the "orst fire ,for 50 years, which raged nil niizht 'in Hull docks. The firo broke out in stacks of Russian timber in the Alexandra dock. All the ships in the docks had to be moved. Thousands of volunteers aided every available fireman in preventing the flames spreading. Trains were used to rush salvaged timber from the danger zone. The flaiues rose oOft. into tho air and were visible for 30 miles. Many moorland fires aro burning in the Midlands, including an area of eight squaro miles near Doncaster, which has been blazing four days. The proprietors of the, Reading brewerv came to tho rescue of thirsty villagers in tho Burghfield district, to whom they sent water in beer casks. Thousands of birds have died of thirst in East Anglia and elsewhere.
