CHATHAM CUP CONTEST
FINAL FOR NORTH ISLAND PONSONBY TEAM SUCCESSFUL [by telegraph—own correspondent] WELLINGTON, Sunday The Millerton All Blackß (South Island) had all the ill-fortune in the Chatham Cup final against Ponsonby (Auckland) at tile Basin Reserve yesterday. In the first half they ran over their opponents and did everything but score. The eecond spoil was more even, but, on the general run of play, the Auckland representatives were distinctly lucky. Both teams played good football, although some of their finishing efforts lacked polish. Millerton kicked off, and J. Morrison stopped the first assault. The South Islanders were going very well and worrying the Auckland defence. G. Orman cent in a hot eliot from 12yds out which Watson cleared, and another by Pollock went over the top. Auckland retaliated with an attack which carried all before it. Innes started the movement and sent on to Aliern, who passed to Jepson. The centreforward placed the ball neatly out of Smith's reach. The goal was scored after 20 minutes' play, and was the outcome' of Ponsonby's first likely attack. An excellent piece of work wae shown by Watson ft minute later. The Ponsonby backs were out of position, and Millerton's centre and right wing were making way for a certain goal. Watson ran yards out of 'the net and managed to beat down the centre's ehot and clear. J. Blyth ( almost scored again before Ponsonby launcned another offensive. Jepson mode a delightful attempt which the _ goalie eaved_ and, following a corner, Millerton's goalie brought oil a fine eave from tho same player. Auckland made the most of a mistake by a Millerton back, and Innes received from Morrison and Ahern, and gave Ponsonby a two-goaU lead. The score at half-time was no indication of the run of the game. Both teams attacked in turn when the second half opened, the first serious challenge coming from Millerton's outside right. His shot was saved by Watson, who was worried the next minute with a corner kick. A beautiful pass from G. Orman was neatly taken by the outside right, who was edgod off the ball in the nick of time. Auckland took a hand and, getting away on the right, Innes made an attempt which was unsuccessful, -and a free kick went behind. Two further attempts by Auckland's centre-forward were frustrated by Smith. A determined challenge* by Millerton was stopped by Watson at the expense of a corner, and from the resulting kick the ball went out to Pollock, -who lifted it beautifully over the heads of a bunch of players into the net. Millerton was given a free kick in the penalty area for "steps." Watson eaved the situation, which was the last noteworthy incident, and the game ended:— Ponsonby, 2; Millerton, 1. Mr. J. Sanderson refereed the game, which was contested in good spirit. WIN FOR GLEN AFTON . [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON. Sunday In a Soccer match played at Hamilton for the Howden Cup yesterday.
