REPRESENTATIVE FIXTURES HAMILTON BEATS CAMBRIDGE Several representative Rugby matches were played in the various country centres on Saturday afternoon. The following results were forwarded by correspondents of the Heuald:— Hamilton.—ln a representative game Hamilton defeated Cambridge by 15 points to 14. Hamilton was disappointing, and tho verdict might easily have been tho other way. Although unfortunate on several occasions, tho visiting backs produced a number of sparkling movements. As fullback Cambridge fielded K. Roid, who plays in a similar position for the Auckland Grammar School, and is at present on vacation. Early in the game Whorskey gained possession and ran half the length of tho field to score Hamilton's first points, P. Clarkin converting. Shortly afterwards Cambridge was again caught off its guard and Tristram scored. Clarkin again converted. Bourko mado an opening for Cambridge and Miller scored. Holmes converting. Another movement in which Byrne, Holmes and Tapper handled, saw tho lastr.amed cross well out for an unconverted try. Cambridge kept up the pressure, and a movement inaugurated by Chapman and Shaw sent Miller across to score his second try. Tho kick failed. Tho half-time score was:—Cambridge, 11; Hamilton, 10. Shortly after play was resumed Tapper made a so.o run and added three points to Cambridge's total. Hedley came out of the Hamilton pack on the twenty-five lino and beat several defenders, to scor© a good try. Clarkin converted, putting Hamilton one point in the lead. Play became very strenuous, and Beer (Cambridge) was ordered off tho field for alleged fighting, although he had been struck first by a Hamilton playor, who was allowed to remain. The gamo ended without further scoro. A challenge match between Hamilton and Morrinsvillo referees for the Feast Cup was won by Hamilton by 6 points to 5. In tho local club competition for the Clarke Cup, Marist defaulted to Old Boys, and Technical defeated Horotiu by 8 points to 6.

The results in the lower grades were as follows:—First junior: Old Boys, 32, Marist Brothers' Old Boys, 0; Ngahinapouri, 12, Kiwi, 0; Railway won from Frnnkton by default. Te Kowhai won from Tech. Old Boys by default. The Ruakura-High School fixture was deferred. Third grade: Hamilton A representatives met Matamata third grade representatives at Matamata, and the game | iTesulted, Matamata. 14, Hamilton, 10. Hamilton B representatives played the Otahuhu third intermediates, the result being, Otahuliu, 11. Hamilton, 8. Te Awamutu.—The big attraction at Albert Park was the meeting of Waikato nnd King Country Maori representatives in the Prince of Wales Cup series. There was a- big attendance and fine weather. Mr. "VV. McCready refereed. Play wns hardly up to the standard expected, although there was some bright play at times. The southerners were heavier in the forwards, and this gave them the advantage, but when the game was opened out, Waikato .did best. At half-time the score was King Country 11, Waikato 10, bnt the final score was:—King Country, 30; Waikato, 21. For the winners tries were got by Taylor, Waka. Bell, Edwards, Waka, Anderson, Jones and Koroheke. "Watero converting two and Taylor one. For Waikato, Maniapoto, R. Jackson, Tukero, Mate and Tukere scorod tries, with conversions by N. Jackson and A. Jackson (2). The curtain-raiser was a semifinal for the Doyle Cup, between Te Awaand Ngutunui, for who should play Ohaupo in the final. Te Awamutu won by 18 points to 13. Jowsey, Hutchinson and Dalton scored tries for the winners, one of which Adams converted. Ho also kicked a penalty goal and Walker a field goal. For Ngutunui, A. Kewisli and Watson scored tries, both being converted by Owens, who also kicked a penalty goal. Mr. W. J. Craik refereed. Manukau.—At Jellicoe Park, Manurewa, the College Rifles senior team played the

Manukau senior representative team as a charity match for injured players, and the game ended in a draw, 9-all. Manukau obtained a lead early in tho game and at .half-time the score was Manukau, 9, College Rifles, 3. The College Rifle 3 pack did splendid work in the Becond spell and the team equalised the ecore a few minutes before the call of time. The Manukau team played itß back 3 in different order from

that in past matches. Hogan, well known as a splendid halfback, played first fiveeighths in creditable manner. E. Cossey took his place behind the scrum with success. Dow played centre-threequarter and was responsible for a good exhibition. As a curtain-raiser, the Marist third grade team played the Manukau third grade representative team and seemed victory by 17 points to 0. At Drury, the Pukekohe juniors beat the Manukau junior representatives by 30 points to 0 in the semi-final of the South Auckland Rugby Union's junior championship competition. Tuakau.—ln a match between the Franklin and Taupiri Rugby Unions, played at Tuakau, Franklin won by 9 points to 8. For Franklin, K. Tonga kicked a penalty goal and Passau and J. Moore scored tries. Mcßurney scored and converted a try

for Taupiri, and Lovell acored a try. Pukekohe.—A match between the Manukau Club and tho. Pukekoho Union at Pukekol:o resulted in a draw. Manukau scored a try. and Guiso kicked a penalty goal for Pukekolie, making tho ecore three all." , .

. Matamata The only game played at Matamata was that between the Hamilton and Matamata third, grade representatives, which proved to be one of the most open games of the season. Hamilton had first use of the wind, but could only lead at half-time by 5 points to 3. In tho second half the home team had slightly the better of the play, and eventually ran out a winner by 14 points to 10. The game was mainly a duel between the home forwards and the Hamilton backs, although tho visiting forwards were much superior in ecrumwork. In the loose, however, they were much inferior. The outstanding players for Matamata were Roberts, Hawke and Pullman, and for Hamilton Louden, Russell and Gearish. Tries for Matamata wero scored by Pullman. Wilson and McCrackon, Roberts converting one and also kicking a penalty goal. For Hamilton Gearish and Flcxman scored tries. Louden converting the first and Hunter the second. Kaltala The Mangonui County junior representatives retained the Brake Shield against the Bay of Islands at Ki)itaia by 15 points to 13. Although tho field was heavy, the game wad open, and flashes of bright football were witnessed. Up to the last few minutes the Bay was leading by 13 points to 12, but m the lant moment Mangonui crossed for tho winning try. The winners secured four unconverted tries and a penalty goal, while the Bay's points were made up from three tries, two of which were converted. Dargavllle The Northern Wairoa Rugby Union's senior match for the Gostello Shield resulted:—Ruawai, 14; Southern, 3. Junior grade: Southern, 8, Dargaville, 5; Tangowahine, 14, Waima, 3. • Matata.—A match between Rangitaiki (holders) and Tauranga (challengers) for the Te Hurunui Challenge Shield was played at Mntata in fine weather. Ten minutes after tho start Hohapata scored for Rangitaiki. and toward the end of the first spell Raerino ecored and P. Howell converted, making tho score at half-time 8 to 0 in favour of Rangitaiki. Rangitaiki held the upper hand in the 6ccond half. Tama scored twice, P. Howell converting one try. The only score for Taurnnga was a penalty goal kicked by Grey. The final ecore _wns: —Rangitaiki, 16; Tauranga, 3. Mr. K. Walker, To Puke, was referee. A curtain-raiser between the Galatea and Whakatane representatives was won by Whakatane by 16 points to 5. Paeroa.—A match between the Paeroa representatives and tho Auckland Training .College senior club team was played in I'aeron. Heavy rain made the field wet and sodden, resulting in good football being almost impossible. The Paeroa forwards were much heavier than the students' pack and had the hotter of the game during the first half. Veddcr, wing-threequarter for Paeroa, mado a fine breakaway and reached the College fullbask. He short-kicked, and McC'orniick, following up fast, secured and dived over. That was the only score in the game, which finished by Paeroa winning by three to nil. Mr. Jrinus was referee. Whangarei.—Weather conditions wore excellent. and tho ground was good at Rugby Park, when an attendance of about 800 witnessed the senior Rugby football match between tho Whangarei representative team and Grafton (Auckland), tho former winning by 37 points to 9. For Whangarei, tries were obtained by Morresey (2),. Pickering (2), White, Proctor, Morgan, o'Siiea and Abbott, three bgmg oenverted, and Kerr potted a goal, and for Grafton Shadbolt scored a try and Palon kicked two penalty goals. The game was very open, play moving fast from one end of tho field to the other. For Grafton. Paton, as fullback, was called upon to do a lot., and was frequently overwhelmed, but he acquitted himself well. Wilkes, Halls and Ratclifl were prominent among the backs. Tho forwards, who were opposed to a very strong combination. played splendidly, the most prominent being Shadbolt, Jackson and Mills. For Whangarei, Kerr, Morgan, White and Pickering were the best, tho last-named being the h?st back on the ground on the day's play. Of the forwards, 'McKenzie, Morresef. Proctor and Doel were the most prominent. Senior knock-out competition: Hikurangi, 12, City, 6; Maungakaramen, 13, Old Boys, 3. Waiuku.—ln a hard, punishing finish, Waiuku was successful in. retaining tho M.isaey Cup against tho challengers, Pukekohe, at Waiuku, by tho narrow margin of 9 points to 8, with a try in tho lust few minutes of tho game. The game was keenly fought, but more hard than brilliant. Pulton opened for Pukekoho with a good try. Fallows converting. Waiuku opened its account when McFarl.me picked up in • the looao and, with a great run. went over. The half-time score was:—Pukekohe. El; Waiuku, 3. The second spell saw J. Massey pty over for Pukekohe. In a fine dush Jackson (Waiuku) drew his mnn and passed to C. Massey, who went over, making the score Waiuku 6, Pukekoho 8. Ilurd, exciting play marked tho closing stages, and, amid wild excitement, Robinson forced his way over for Waiuku, this being the winning try. Waiuku, 9; Pukekohe, 8. For Pukekohe, Carter was the best back, with Massey, Nathan and Moflit the pick of the pack. Prominent in the Waiuku backs were Jackson and Moyle. with Kempe, Massey. Robinson and Kerebs to tho fore in a very even pack. Mr. W. Pleydell was the referee. Tho donor of the cup. Mr. J. N. Massey. Taupfrl.—Morrinsville defeated Taupiri at Ngaruawahia in a good, even game by 17 points to 16. Morrinsvillo won the toss. Early in tho game Bodmin, Morrinsville, secured tho first try a good way out, Lipscombe failing with the kick. Craig retaliated for Taupiri, Smith's Tiick failing and the points wsre even. Taupiri secured the noxt try, Smith again failing to convert Brooks' try. Denby, for Taupiri, then crossed Morrinsville'e line and Carlson converted. Shortly before half-time Lipscombe brought Morrinsville's total to 6 with a penalty kick, half-time finding the score: Taupiri, 11; Morrinsville. 0. in tno second half a try by Robson, converted by Lipscombe, brought the score even apain. Belcher retaliated for Taupiri and Carlson, converting with a fine kick, apain gave Taupiri a lead of 2 points. Aikin (Morrinsvillo) secured the winning hyLipscombe's kick failing. Sunday In a game fhat for the most part was ragged and uninspiring, the touring Southland Rugby representatives defeated Wairaiapa yesterday by 15 points to 11. Win* rarnpa gave a very disappointing exhibition and, except for ten minutes of the second spell, it never shaped like a winning side. The visitors secured the ball from the scrums with monotonous regularity, but their backs lacked combination and more especially penetrative ability.
